harry styles and the ongoing music superiority myth

Rolling Stones, May 2017 issue
Harry Styles released new music recently with the single Sign of the Times which has been on repeat on the radio. It’s a good song and whatever but what actually caught my attention was something Harry said in his Rolling Stones interview.

Who's to say that young girls who like pop music -- short for popular, right? -- have worse musical taste than a 30-year-old hipster guy,” Styles questioned. “That's not up to you to say. Music is something that's always changing. There's no goal posts. Young girls like the Beatles. You gonna tell me they're not serious?
How can you say young girls don't get it?” Styles pointed out. “They're our future. Our future doctors, lawyers, mothers, presidents, they kind of keep the world going.

I was never a huge One Direction fan but I did sometimes listen to them back when I was fourteen and they were crazy popular and I still lowkey listen to their Take Me Home album when I’m studying. But still I wasn’t one to keep updated with their concerts, albums, interviews and personal lives because they were so uninteresting lol. So it’s weird to take anything they ever say to heart but when Harry mentioned this it just felt like something I could really relate to.

People will passionately bash young girls who are into pop music generally for not having ‘better music taste’ which is stupid logic considering everyone has different tastes so you can’t really judge on what’s good music and what’s not. Good music can be very subjective. Especially with so many different music styles and types.

The fact that this discussion which can start off as a curious question end up into a heated, sometimes offensive debate on two people feeling like their choice of music is better than the others is crazy.

Where does this superiority come from? If it’s from music charts then how can you hate on Taylor Swift even though she’s repeatedly been number one. How can you choose to dislike a certain type of music because it’s not English but then dab to Desiigner even though you don’t understand 90% of what he says.

With so much music styles available to use, we all should be open people’s music tastes and choices in general. We don’t choose what music we like, it chooses us.

I especially loved the part at the end:

Teenage-girl fans -- they don't lie. If they like you, they're there. They don't act 'too cool.' They like you, and they tell you. Which is sick."

To end this post I'd like to list some of my favourite albums.

april read: note to self, connor franta

So, I impulsively picked this book out because I went into Waterstone’s five minutes before it was closing and it caught my eye as I was passing the celebrity books section. I literally flicked through it for a couple seconds to get a gist of it and it seemed cute and so that’s how I came about purchasing the book.

Connor Franta: note to self

I’m the type of person that can easily spend hours clicking on my YouTube recommendations of random things but never subscribe to anyone or consistently watch their videos. However, I vaguely recognised the author’s name as being a well-known youtuber which I was cautious about because books by youtubers tend to be a bit pretentious (or just plain boring) especially if it’s not written by them. But I’m a sucker for a cute book cover and the contents page looked deep and honest, and then when I had a flick through, I was so feeling the photography and poems inside.

I’ve not finished the book but my favourite chapter so far is It will always be okay on page ninety nine. Short and bitter sweet but it also left me feeling weirdly assured. It felt like something I’d wrote except my ass has never been to the Grammys but the feelings that the short essay recalled were feelings I was very familiar with.

The pictures inside were so simple but striking. It easily flows in with the poems and short essays, making it easy to quickly flick through. A variety of photographs were included, taken at different seasons, countries, locations, angles etc. I’m guessing they were all taken by Connor himself since he mentions taking certain ones.

And lastly, the poems.

I lowkey went through the book, and read all the poetry and the one I particularly liked was

lingering shadows
9:31 p.m.

for the longest time there was a shadow
lingering over us like a cloud above a city
we avoided it like an illness, fleeing to
the mountains in search of the sun
but there was only rain
and we could only run
so far

C. Franta, Note to Self, page 75, Keywords Press, Jan 2017

This book was probably my best book store impulse purchase. I like to buy books that I can easily reread and this book ticks that box. Anyway, that’s my first book review done. I’m not sure if it’s a review because I didn’t give it a rating but I would definitely recommend it to you guys.

I actually ordered another book online today which I’m super excited to read so look out for another book review soon!

a look back: first year at university

when we were blissfully unaware as to what we were getting ourselves into (also not my best photo) pictured with sasha
If I had to use three words to describe my first year at university, it would have to be busy, refreshing and very academic. My first year at CU seemed to fly by because the university keeps you so busy from week one.

As a stay at home student, my university experience wasn’t as impactful as other students. While they were exploring the city, I was starting my new part time job. Though, interestingly during freshers, it was my first time being in and around the university campus even though I was familiar with the city so I did experience the lost feeling they probably felt (lol).

Freshers’ was as you would expect it. Party invites, lots of socialising, joining a dozen societies, free stuff and so on. You will think you’ve met your best friends at freshers’ and then two weeks later, you’ll have a new squad. I still have numbers from people I struggle to remember meeting from my first two weeks. What you make of freshers’ week really depends on the person.

Mid October, I decided to change my course from Human Resource Management to International Business Management because of a change in career interests. I officially transferred to the IBM course at the start of November. So, I ended up starting my official course a little late. Most people were already in cliques and the modules were past the introduction stage. Thankfully, I only had two modules in semester one and since I was only in two days, it was easy to catch up. I also got time to attend society meets and do some volunteering which was a great opportunity for me to meet new people.

Regarding the modules, I took in first year, they were all basic business foundations. Some modules were obviously more interesting or challenging than the other. I also took a mandarin class as my advantage module which was probably the most difficult module but I was with such an interactive class, so I enjoyed it immensely. I also had the opportunity to take a Korean class with Linguae Mundi which was so fun!

One of the things I most enjoyed about my first year is that your friendship group is so diverse with everyone from all over the globe. It’s so interesting and different because it was not something I was used to. By joining cultural societies such as One World and volunteering at Culturae Mundi it allowed me to expand my friendship group and my knowledge of cultures in general.

Overall, my first year at Coventry University was interesting. I think the one thing I’m looking forward to however is the long summer holiday we get!

note: i had made a schedule of my first year which was more specific and detailed but the quality was lost when i transferred it on to my post
